I stumbled upon a great deal that I learned about from my sister and I never would have thought of it myself had she not brought it up. She works at the local food co op and mentioned to her boss that I had chickens who loved to destroy my garden by devouring everything. Her boss asked if I would be interested in taking their "compost" to feed the chickens. Most of the stuff is things that are expired but still edible (not rotten.) Severely bruised fruit, wilted lettuce... my chickens don't complain, in fact they are thrilled to be doing their part! They are so happy to have greens in the winter, and it is at no cost to me. The grocery store benefits as they don't need to find a place to dispose of the unwanted compost. Win win.
Imagine how many grocery stores out there are just throwing these things in the trash. Even if you can barter- compost for a dozen eggs, sounds like a very fair exchange to me. Of course it never hurts to ask!
