With all the chemicals in our food these days I became interesting is seeing what we could produce for ourselves. Besides the health factor there is also something to be said for being able to produce for your own family. A pride, a joy, a new experience under your belt. In addition, it's a great learning experience for both my husband and I and our children. Back to basics, providing for yourselves!
With this in mind we decided to buy some hens that would produce eggs for our plates, as well as entertainment for our kids and fertilizer for our organic garden. We got the okay with the city and made the order. They arrived in a box at the local farm supply store on April 2nd, and were so cute and fluffy!

We have enjoyed watching them grow and have been astounded at how quickly they become real chickens. We are going onto 4 weeks and they have more than quadrupled in size and can now somewhat fly! We had to move them to a bigger brooder and put nets over the top to keep them in. The picture below was taken a few days ago, a far cry from the little balls of fluff they once were. My husband says they prefer to be held like a wine glass, haha!
Today I introduced some apples. They didn't quite know what to think of them.
While I find taking on chickens to be an amazingly worthwhile endeavor, make sure you do your research before deciding to take on a brood yourself. Although it really is simple enough, it is extra work and you need a little know how to get started, not to mention the start up costs. I will post all my trials and achievements as I go, as well as the progress we are making on the coop that we are making out of an unused swing set in our yard. Stay tuned!
