When I first discovered my extreme sensitivity to MSG I was shocked to find out how common it was, not only in our food, but in our beauty products. I panicked! What was I going to do? I was on such a tight budget as it was and the natural deodorant was so expensive. That was when I ran into a recipe online, I tried it, and it was wonderful. (original post where they give a lot more information: http://cadryskitchen.com/2012/08/29/diy-coconut-oil-deodorant/
One thing I didn't like about it was their mode of application. I didn't like sticking my hand in a jar every morning. I decided to try putting it in an old deodorant container, and it worked!
I have been using this deodorant for over a year now. It works different than antiperspirant which uses chemicals to clog your sweat glands. This deodorant allows your body to sweat like it was designed to do, but it works in 3 ways:
1. The baking soda neutralizes the odor.
2. The coconut oil is a natural bacteria and fungus inhibitor, it helps odor from starting and it moisturizes your skin.
3. The corn starch absorbs wetness and helps you to feel dry.
I have not had a problem with odor or wetness while using this. I wash in the morning, apply and I'm good to go. I have not noticed much for staining except after I had been wearing it for many months, and this was mostly located on my bras. It was a simple fix. I used some laundry stain spray and washed them, the oil was gone.
There are so many reasons to use natural beauty products but you don't need me to harp on you about health benefits. Maybe you just like to save money? No matter your reason, I am here to serve, and this is the method I use.
Ingredients:
5 or 6 T. coconut oil
1/4 cup corn starch
1/4 cup baking soda
2 or 3 empty and clean deodorant cartridges
1 t. essential oil (only if you desire a scent)

Ingredients:
5 or 6 T. coconut oil
1/4 cup corn starch
1/4 cup baking soda
2 or 3 empty and clean deodorant cartridges
1 t. essential oil (only if you desire a scent)
This is one of my husband's old deodorant cartridges that I cleaned out, the picture is shot from above. In order to clean it out, I turned the knob on the bottom as far up as it would go and the plastic disc came right out. I put it in the sink and used the hot water to blast the chunky white stuff off. I did the same to the inside. Once all the visible chunks were gone, I washed it in dish soap and removed the labels. I replaced the plastic oval disc and screwed it back down as far as it would go.
Melt 5 or 6 T. of coconut oil in the microwave.
Add the cornstarch and baking soda, stir. I added a teaspoon of my favorite essential oil for fragrance, but it works just as good without it. Stir all together until all lumps are gone.
Put the empty cartridges on a plate. The reason for this is that I have come across a few that leak out the bottom, luckily, most don't.
Use a funnel to get your oil mixture into the narrow opening of your cartridge. Watch carefully as they fill up fast.

This recipe was enough to fill up one large, one medium, and half a small size deodorant. This is enough to last me a few months. Replace the caps and put them in the freezer to set. It won't take long.
When it is set (after about 20 min.) they will be solid. Here is what it looks like when pushed up and out. Don't be surprised if you have to let it come to room temp before you can move the dial, it sticks when frozen. Once you finally get it moving, it will continue to move freely until you start over and refill them again. Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees, which means if your house is warmer than 75, you must store in the refrigerator. In the summer when it is hot, putting deodorant on is one of my daily highlights (oh that cold from the fridge feeling is good!) During the winter, I store it on my bathroom shelf. It stays just fine. When I took it camping, I put it in a baggy and kept it in the cooler. Not a problem.
I did have a couple days when I first switched where my skin was mildly irritated. I don't know what caused this, but it was short lived. Some say it's a transitional thing. Could be. Be patient, it gets better and quickly.
Here is a bonus that no one else will tell you: because it's all natural, feel free to paint it on in other sweaty areas (ahem, that crease under your boobs!) Sounds silly, but when it's hot outside, it's soothing.
